Sundials are more than just timekeeping devices; they are works of art that reflect the scientific understanding of their creators. The design of a sundial requires a deep knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, and craftsmanship. Each sundial is unique, tailored to its specific location and the desired level of accuracy. The gnomon, the part of the sundial that casts the shadow, must be precisely aligned with the Earth’s axis to ensure accurate time readings.
TEMPS PARTAGES is dedicated to preserving and promoting the art and science of sundial design. We offer workshops and lectures that explore the history of sundial design, from ancient Egyptian obelisks to modern-day creations. Participants will learn about the different types of sundials, including horizontal, vertical, and equatorial sundials. They will also gain insights into the mathematical principles that govern their operation.
Our upcoming exhibition will showcase a collection of sundials from different periods and regions. The exhibition will highlight the diversity of sundial designs and the ingenuity of their creators. We invite you to join us and discover the fascinating world of sundial design. The exhibition will run from July 15th to August 31st at the Espace Culturel in Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye.
